Sustainability

Tesco plc. has  recently introduced it’s third value, that ‘we use our scale for good’, which stands alongside the two other corporate values: ‘no one tries harder for customers’ and ‘we treat everyone how we like to be treated’ [1]. From this new value the company has generated three big ambitions, which are:

  • To lead the global fight against food waste

  • To help customers and colleagues lead healthier lives

  • To create opportunities for millions of young people

The roles that our venture into the biofuel market can  play within these values, and indeed how it can benefit society as a whole, are shown below.

Perfect Recycling

In order to reduce level of waste in the UK, Tesco will form a partnership with grocery retailers around the country. We will develop the waste distribution system to accommodate food waste from retailers and gather it in the Tesco Central Recycle Station. The fact that we will utilize the food waste will benefit us without adversely affecting others, and also means that no biomass is actually wasted.

In store, the customers will be given waste bags in order to help them separate food waste from other rubbish. Farms will not be required to produce stock for our refineries and will still produce food for consumption that leads us to expect that there will be no increase in overall food price.

Green Transportation Campaign

Reducing air pollution from the transportation sector is one part of Tesco main activities. By producing biofuel Tesco is collaborating with main renewable energy players in UK, and are committed to decreasing fossil fuel usage and building a green environment. Carbon emissions from vehicles will be reduced and a cleaner atmosphere will be created. We will also collaborate with environmental NGOs and local communities to support the campaign and develop legislations.

Job Opportunity

Tesco will create significant and wide-ranging job opportunities by their introduction into the biofuels industry. We believe that young people should participate in this industry as pioneers to build better practices which support green environment. Tesco estimates that throughout the venture we will create thousands of job opportunities.
